Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, the active ingredient of which is sildenafil. Viagra’s properties were discovered by chance during tests to find a cure for high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease. In the course of laboratory studies, it was found that although sildenafil does not cure cardiovascular disease, it does help induce penile erection. The substance was patented in 1996 and two years later was marketed under the name Viagra (Skt. Wjaghra), which in Sanskrit writing means “tiger”.
